This is. really attractive deep purple variety of sugar cane.  The maroon stalks create a vivid splash of colour.
 
Sugar cane is a multi-purpose plant, excellent for planting as shelter, biomass, fodder for people or animals.  Sugar cane grows well in most soil conditions, including in damp corners and exposed areas.  Will handle light frosts when mature
 
Fresh canes are tasty to chew on, or can be juiced.
 
Position 
Sugar cane is reasonably frost hardy when mature and can tolerate a wide range of soils types.  Grows like a clump of bamboo, and will need managing to contain the size of the clump over time.
 
Care 
Protect from frost and overwatering.
